April 21, 2025 | Shanghai — Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) held its first “Super Technology Day” in Shanghai on April 21, 2025. The company announced the launch of three groundbreaking electric vehicle (EV) battery technologies designed to significantly improve charging efficiency and vehicle range. These new products include the Shenxing Second-Generation Superfast Charging Battery, Naxtra Sodium-Ion Battery, and Xiaoyao Dual-Cell Battery System.

1. Shenxing Second-Generation Superfast Charging Battery

The Shenxing battery system, CATL’s next-generation ultra-fast charging solution, has been enhanced for both fast-charging and all-climate performance. Key features include:

  • Charging speed:
The Shenxing battery can charge from 5% to 80% in 15 minutes in -10°C cold weather. Under normal conditions, it can achieve a peak charging rate of 12C, with a peak charging power of 1.3 MW, enabling it to charge to 80% in a shorter time.

  • Range:
It can provide a driving range of up to 520 km with just 5 minutes of charging, and it can achieve 1-second, 2.5-km energy replenishment.

  • Energy density:
The battery uses the latest LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry. Based on CTP 3.0 technology, the battery pack volume energy density reaches 415–425 Wh/L, and the energy density is approximately 180 Wh/kg.

  • Cycle life:
There is no specific information on cycle life in the official release, but generally, LFP batteries are known for their good cycle stability.

The Shenxing Second-Generation battery is set to enter mass production in Q4 2025, bringing fast-charging technology to mainstream EVs and ensuring more reliable performance in cold climates.

2. Naxtra Sodium-Ion Battery

The Naxtra sodium-ion battery marks CATL’s first major foray into sodium-ion technology, which is expected to revolutionize the EV market, especially in regions with limited access to lithium resources. Key details include:

  • Energy density:
The sodium-ion battery offers a density of about 175 Wh/kg, making it a suitable option for various EV categories.

  • Charging speed:
It supports a peak charging rate of 5C, can replenish 75 km of range in 30 seconds, and complete 80% of the charge in 10 minutes.

  • Cycle life:
The Naxtra battery has a cycle life of over 10,000 cycles, which is much higher than the 2,000–3,000 cycles typically found in lithium-ion batteries.

  • Low-temperature performance:
In a -40°C environment, the battery can still maintain 90% of its available power, and when the SOC is as low as 10%, the vehicle’s power generally does not decrease.

The Naxtra 24V heavy-duty truck start-stop battery will be mass-produced in June 2025, and the Naxtra passenger-car power battery will be mass-produced in December 2025. These batteries will provide sustainable and cost-effective solutions for EV manufacturers.

3. Xiaoyao Dual-Cell Battery System

The Xiaoyao dual-cell battery system is a product of the deep integration of CATL’s dual-core architecture and self-generating negative-electrode technology. It combines different battery chemistries to meet the needs of different driving scenarios. Features include:

  • Dual-cell architecture:
The Xiaoyao system has two independent energy zones with five dual-core functions, including:

    • High-voltage dual-core

    • Low-voltage dual-core

    • Structural dual-core

    • Thermal-management dual-core

    • Thermal-runaway safety-protection dual-core
This ensures the continuity, stability, and safety of power output.

  • Range:
The system provides a maximum range of up to 1,500 km, making it an ideal choice for premium and long-distance EVs.

  • Smart switching:
The system intelligently switches between different energy zones based on driving conditions and user habits through the “electric-electric range-extension” technology, optimizing energy use.

The Xiaoyao system is currently undergoing testing with OEM partners, with plans for rollout in 2026.
