Developed by a subsidiary of the State Power Investment Corporation, this system marks a pioneering application of hydrogen energy technology in the polar region.

The hydrogen fuel cell is a core component of Qinling Station’s hybrid power supply system, which integrates wind, solar, hydrogen, and diesel power. The system includes a 100 kW wind power generation unit, a 130 kW solar power generation unit, a 30 kW hydrogen energy system, a 300 kWh low-temperature energy storage battery system, and a diesel power generation unit. This setup ensures a stable and sustainable energy supply for the station, even in the harsh Antarctic environment.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Capabilities
The hydrogen fuel cell system is designed for modular scalability, with power outputs ranging from 50 kilowatts to several megawatts. It boasts a power generation efficiency of 50% and a combined heat and power efficiency exceeding 90%. With a design lifespan of 40,000 hours, the system can operate independently for up to 24 days, providing a maximum output of 30 kilowatts.
Environmental Impact
This hydrogen fuel cell system significantly reduces environmental impact compared to traditional fossil fuel-based power generation. For every kilowatt-hour of electricity produced, approximately 400 grams of standard coal are saved, and carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by about 1 kilogram. It is estimated to cut Qinling Station’s fossil fuel consumption by more than 100 tons annually.
